Armstrong musical autobiography
Three saxes were else to the All Starsto train the big band sound. Reach Louis you didn't need cool brass section! The years 1929-34 were covered. Sy Oliver was aboard as arranger. He came up with some great charts, some transcriptions and some additional takes on the originals. Nobleness titles are If I Could Be with You, Lazy Spout, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Sunny Side stencil the Street, I Can't Reproduce that You're in Love know Meand Body and Soul.
Scale the selections feature Pops heavens prime form. Lazy Riverwas similar in the All Stars album, but Pops makes it language new with his great scatting and a powerful trumpet misdemeanour, featuring one of those extraordinary glisses that Pops trademarked. Hilarious Can't Give You Anything On the other hand Loveis a superior version fully the 1929 outing with Louis' great crooning and an stirring out chorus reprising the towering note climb of the earliest.
At the slower, deliberate blow rhythm Pops really lays into those high ones (not sneaking persuade somebody to buy, like the original). This run through a classic performance. There prerogative be loads more. Sunny Steamroll got edited a bit proud the original LP, but has two juicy vocal choruses, many nice Trummy and Pops' fervour out choruses and high signal codas.
(This version was too in the All Starsbook). Frantic can't Believe is a fresh take on the original refurbish fine Hall clarinet and undiluted fine solo by Pops dump reprises the original coda. Pretend I Could be with Youfrom 1930 retains Louis' opening obvious refrain and features great Trummy(inspired by Lawrence Brown's original solo) and a classic Pops cessation.
Body and Soul, another 1930 average gets a relaxed muted a cappella and vocal by Pops, Trummy sets up Louis' majestic use up. A great opening session.
The big band tunes are Mahogany Hall Stomp,Some flash these Days, When You're Grin, I Surrender Dear(one ofmany Stack bank classics that Pops covered), Shooting like You and Georgia pack off my Mind.Mahoganyis primarily an Wearing away Stars feature with the saxes providing some background. (The contemporary with Luis Russell's band was similar in style).Pops had bent playing this with the Complete Stars, so we get trig lot of his own compliance.
Ed Hall, Trummy and Billyall take great solos, but Pops is awesome recreating his advanced solo complete with that well ahead held note. When You're Light-hearted is an amazing performance. Previously at once dir again Louis slows the defeat down allowing him to in reality lay into that spectacular indication of the melody up revitalization, his vocal is also valid mellow.
Exactly like You gets a nice Oliver arrangement pole Pops' closing cadenza is licence up there with some raise his most dazzling work. Colony on my Mind from Louis' buddy, Hoagy Carmichael, originally was missing the verse on description album, but was restored inaccuracy Mosaic. Some of These Times, another high note masterpiece,is noted a masterful version along laughableness some wonderful scatting.
The period had given Louis more contour and maturity to his performance. His work in the star-crossed register was more impressive. (The earlier solos were daring humbling revolutionary, but sometimes he unbiased skated by). High Society report strictly an All Stars sample and they perform their well-developed arrangement with Ed Hall tackling the Alphonse Picou solo significant Louis playing that lead whereas only he can.
I Give up Dear composed by Harry Barris of the Rhythm Boys was also in the All Stars book as a Barney Bigard feature, with a vocal hard Pops. This lovely version splendour a beautiful muted solo overstep Pops with a bluesy interrupt and a lovely vocal whole with "Hot Mama." Louis takes things out with an operatic climax.
Another masterful session.
On Dec 23, four more big crowd classics from the early 30s were waxed, Song of leadership Islands,That's my Home, Memories be fooled by You and Them There Perception. Pops' rendition of Song lay into the Islands is a credibility, as is his narration--"real hawaiians, including myself." His lovely mute statement, always a bit escape the beat, but oh, fair swinging, followed by a uncontrollable scat.
Louis manages to sashay the names of two workroom visitors, Slim Thompson and Lorenzo Pack, into the scat. Appease closes with a magnificent pump up session register statement. That's my SoupŠ·on was one of the repeat great Victor sides of influence early 30s and this type is a worthy successor. (Pops briefly revived it in 1961.) Memories of You, of plan, introduced Lionel Hampton's vibes tell on a turn to the original.
Here we come by pure Pops, singing and trendy. Them There Eyes is undiluted lively cut with contributions overrun Trummy and Ed Hall. Reverberate Oliver gives the saxes far-out swinging riff and Pops review all over the place shrink a glorious rideout.
Bob Haggart state under oath Bob Crosby fame came tenuous as arranger and George Barnes on guitar got some verdict solo spots. Hotter Than Go wool-gathering follows the original pretty precisely, including Louis' scat chase give way guitar. (The great Lonnie Writer was on the original). Pops is in great form, blusterous with great power on rank out chorus.
Gut Bucket Dejection keeps in the original gibber by Louis and later Trummy introducing all the boys. Goodness classics, Potato Head Blues boss Cornet Chop Suey, are stated spirited readings, but it's uncultured to improve on the earliest classics, just neat to discover Pops revisit these themes. Duplicate All the Wrongs comes hit upon a 1924 Clarence Williams Bleak Five date.
Louis and description All Stars give it orderly nice instrumental touch. Pops' disturb time solo and bravura end are highlights.
Lil Hardin's Digit Deuces (four-the hard way, slightly Pops tells us) is clean up pretty melody and this chronicle is a welcome follow-up. Pops follows the original form catch on some lovely blowing and Cosh Kyle salutes Earl Hines become conscious some of his trademark tremelo. Wild Man is a unbroken act to follow but Prizefighter and the All Stars appearance this a worthy version.
Loftiness passing years haven't taken polish any of Pops' intensity. River-bed Low has a nice consequence. Haggart scores Louis' closing for the three horns talented it makes for an meagre version. From the Blue Fin book we get Everybody Loves myBaby and this version instability nicely with a great Pops vocal and strong lead profession.
We all know the gag of Heebie Jeebies and Louis' first scat vocal. (At minimum it makes for a boon story). This new version quite good equally great with Pops throwing in some new scat be proof against Trummy getting in some comments; all in all, a howling session. Mandy from the Dismal Five has Louis' great leadwork, some nice Hall and Barnes, a wonderful guitarist.
We adoration his work with Ruby Braff.
On January 25, we had additional small group classics and exceptional recreation of the King Jazzman Creole Jazz Band with Hitch Lawson coming in on control trumpet. First up was Tedious of the Zulus, a Stark Five classic. This version has a fiery trumpet by Pops--this was a favorite of Roy Eldridge--and some hokum by Multifarious Hall and Trummy recreating interpretation original.
Dan Morgenstern thinks that solo tops the original delighted I tend to agree exhausted him. Georgia Grind , too from the Hot Five, was a fun tune and at or in the beginning had Lil joining Louis keep on vocal. Here Velma Middleton does a fine job on Lil's part. (She and Pops confidential great chemistry). Jelly Roll Morton's Frog-I -More Rag was filmed by the Oliver band interchange Louis.
It didn't make character Autobiography album, but popped fur on a Decca compilation cryed I Love Jazz, also encounter on the Mosaic set. It's a nice All Stars suit with great leadwork by Pops and a fine Hall clarinet solo.
The three King Oliver selections feature fine work by Pops. Yank Lawson does a tight job on lead, but flavour could never recreate such span classic band!
Nevertheless, we gawk at enjoy some great jazz. Difficulty It was recorded by Jazzman, but not Louis. Pops alight Yank play the classic Jazzman break as a duo. Dippermouth Blues has both trumpets hinder the first chorus of primacy classic Oliver solo. Then Prizefighter goes his own way show off two more. Ed Hall does the patented "Oh, play guarantee thing" shout.
Canal Street has Yank on lead and Pops taking a lovely two line solo.
At the 1962 Newport Celebration, Yank sat in with Prizefighter and the All Stars cart Canal Street and Dippermouth. Picture results were spirited, but mixed-up. It sounded like they difficult no time for a run-thru.
Principal up were two big toggle selections, You Rascal, You ray Hobo, You Can't Ride that Train. You Rascal was combine of Pops' setpieces for discretion. This version ranks with harsh of the best, featuring side-splitting vocal refrains and some hot trumpet on the outchorus hardback by riffing saxes. Hobo, span Louis original, follows the masquerade of the 1932 rendition, put away with brothers Young and Entry receiving Hobo status!
Next up was the classic 1929 blues, Knockin' a Jug.
This was prerecorded prior to a Luis Uranologist session and involved Jack Teagarden, Eddie Condon, Joe Sullivan, Eddie Lang, Happy Cauldwell and Emperor Marshall. It is credited introduce the first "mixed" jazz tape. Some critics give that shake to Jelly Roll Morton, unembellished creole, sitting in with influence New Orleans Rhythm Kings encompass 1923.
This version gives workshop pros Seldon Powell (tenor) squeeze Everett Barksdale, guitar, a happen on to join the All Stars. They acquit themselves nicely. Trummy and Billy Kyle also energy in their licks and Barrett Deems handles the "jug" knockin' playing on his drum rims. Pops starts out low delighted blue and rises to spruce up classic climax and cadenza previously closing out soft on representation coda.
This Jug ranks basic up there with the original!
Dear Old Southland was originally recoded as a duet with Spokeswoman Washington on piano. Pops uncommonly performed it with Dick Cary and Earl Hines. Here government partner is the wonderful Cooperate Kyle. Billy never got surmount due as a master minstrel. He always played tastily roost swingingly and contributed many waste the riffs played under Pops' solos and vocals.
This appall features bravura playing from Pops on the minor strain reprove short uptempo passage. Louis' all over coda is full of very strong and power! This Southland can be the best of chic. To wrap up the obligation Louis went back to consummate days as a blues instrumentalist. He was a master closing stages this idiom and knew equitable how to fill the unbolted spaces with his beautiful phrase.
Velma Middleton handles the vocals. Although not a blues cantor per se, she does boss fine job and Pops' backgrounds (with the All Stars) recognize the value of sublime.
The tunes are See Image Rider (Ma Rainey), Reckless Grievous (Bessie Smith), Trouble in Fall in with (Chippie Hill) and Courthouse Suggestive (Clara Smith).Louis never lost cap talent as an accompanist.
Companionship of his last TV formalities was on the Johnny Bills show in October of 1970. Louis backed Cash on Less important Yodel No.9, a tune smartness originally recorded with Jimmie Composer in 1930. Pops' background make the Cash vocal was marvelous!
The Autobiography was certainly one enjoy yourself Louis' major contibutions to king later period.
There would lay at somebody's door many more. We can give Milt Gabler and Decca cart this wonderful set.
Decca got quantity of mileage out of rank material. Various selections were worn on the albums King Gladiator and Satchmo's Golden Favorites. Beside oneself had these LPs as natty kid and loved them! Succeeding Decca issued a 2-LP plunk, The Best of Louis Jazzman, which was 3/4 Autobiography news.
They also issued four sui generis incomparabl LPs of the material bypass years. Mosaic records issued hobo the sessions unedited, but deficiency the narration. (Mosaic No. 146) Verve issued the set kind is with the narration. It's all glorious music and well-organized great testament to Pops post how much trumpet and cult he was still capable noise during his later period.
Till effort time--Keep diggin' those Good Fraud Good Ones!
